The lecture about learning English

I went to hear a lecture of Mr. Matsumoto about learning English and English conversation. He is a simultaneous translator.
Hmm... That was not good enough. Things I gained were not many.

I'm looking for the better way to learn English. He said English conversation programs on NHK were not good to learn English. I'm using one of them.

"Things I gained were not many". I'm not sure what you mean... :P

I presume the 'things' that you mean here would be knowledge or experience? or you simply did not understand? or you didn't catch much of what he said?

Anyway, these 'things' can't really be measure therefore 'many' shouldn't be used. You should use 'much' for anything that you can't count (with your fingers).

Example of 'things' you use the term 'much' with... like, money ("how much money do you have?" instead of "how many money do you have?"

Yes, knowledge. Hmm... or useful things.

"Things" is uncountable? Don't people say "there are many things..."?

i think the best way to say that is "I did not get much out of it"...but do not ask me to explain the grammar!

NHK programs are OK if you go practice the lessons soon after. if not, it is eay to forget. using the language is most important - for many people that means living overseas. of course, it has not helped me too much, but i am lazy!

Thank you so much.

I want to have much time for English conversation. So I'm looking for a language exchange partner, I can't find though.

By the way, I think it's difficult for people to explain the grammar of their mother language.

certainly explaining it in another language is difficult.

i can be your language exchange partner, but i have a very strange schedule...you can reach me at my e-mail: kirkb (at sign) akt (dot) miinet (dot) or (dot) jp

Thank you, Kirk.
I send you a mail later.

Since the two of you are residing in Japan, you should put to use the miracles of modern technology like the internet and microphones.

Have online conversations by using them. By conversing, you'd learn faster too. That way, you'd learn not only how sentences are spoken but also how they're pronounced. :D

Online conversations by using the Internet and microphones!? Wow!!
I'm an IT trainer (computer and networking technology trainer), but outside of work, I don't use them usefully at all. Haha...
I guess you are familiar with them, right?

um... sort of. They're useful tools for staying in touch with your loved ones (family, etc) who reside far away.

I use a mac and eventhough my powerbook has a built-in mic, i've not use VoIP apps like iChat and Skype for ages... beside I'm currently living without internet access. :P

Yes, they are useful tools.
But even if I have those tools, I can't contact anyone using them because there is no person who has those tools around me. Haha...
