"to ---" vs. "--ing" In case of "NEED"

I didn't know there is a "need --ing" pattern.

What I learned is;

"The batteries in the radio need to be changed."

"Need --ing" can be used instead of "need be done".

"The batteries in the radio need changing."

Another example sentence is;

"This room needs redecorating. (= to be redecorated)"

I saw "need --ing" pattern for the first time. I wonder if native speakers use this pattern often.

My room needs arranging as soon as possible.
